    BILL OF RIGHTS DAY
    COMMEMORATED IN DOVER

The League of Women Voters of Delaware (LWVDE) hosted a Bill of Rights Day celebration in Dover on December 15, 2007. The event was cosponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union of Delaware and the American Association of University Women of Delaware.

The event honored of the 216th anniversary of the adoption of the Bill of Rights.

Russell McCabe, state archivist and director of Delaware Public Archives, presented a history of the Bill of Rights and Delaware's role in its ratification. The audience was treated to a viewing of the Delaware's copy of the original Bill of Rights. Drewry Fennell, executive director of ACLU of Delaware, discussed the relevance of the Bill Rights to current public policy issues. Other speakers included Maisha Britt, president of the AAUW of Delaware, and Rahsmi Rangan, president of LWVDE.

Rangan said the protection of individual liberties as laid out in the Bill of Rights has been central to the League's work throughout its history.

"More recently," she added, "the League has urged lawmakers to protect civil liberties by advocating against warrantless domestic surveillance, lobbying in support of legislation that would limit some of the PATRIOT Act's extreme provisions, promoting an independent judiciary, and sponsoring numerous education projects aimed at informing citizens of their rights."
