 Fred Breukelman

Fred Breukelman is vice president of Delaware Audubon, and has been a board member for the past 13 years. He has been a member of National Audubon since 1980. He is also the electronic communication chair.

"I've been an environmentalist all my life," he says. While in a small South Dakota high school, he joined his first environmental group, the National Wildlife Federation. He later became active in other environmental organizations, including the Sierra Club. Changes instituted in National Audubon during the tenure of Audubon President (and former Delaware Governor) Russell W. Peterson encouraged Fred to become more involved in the Audubon Society.

Fred believes that environmental issues are now of greater importance than ever before. He also believes that makes environmental science and science education more important than ever. He wants do more public education about the environment, and sees DelawareAudubon.org as a tool to do that. He is concerned about habitat loss in Delaware, including the loss of forests and wetlands. As a certified health education specialist, he is especially interested in environmental issues related to health.

Fred is a certified health education specialist, and works as director of health education for the Delaware Division of Public Health. He is immediate past president of the national professional society, the Directors of Health Promotion and Education. In his spare time, he likes to read, write, work on websites, and get involved with almost anything relating to music. He also enjoys outdoor activities, including bicycling—and he is a member of the Delaware Bicycle Council. He and his wife, Joan, currently live northwest of Dover.
