For Friday, December 26th, this is Birdline Delaware from the Delaware Museum of Natural History in Greenville. The unofficial Delaware State Year List remains at 325 species this week.

An immature male COMMON EIDER was reported last Saturday at Indian River Inlet. Large numbers of LONG-TAILED DUCKS and SURF SCOTERS are now being seen at the jetty. Also reported were 5 GREAT CORMORANT, BLACK SCOTER, PURPLE SANDPIPER and RUDDY TURNSTONE, FORSTER'S TERN and over 200 BONAPARTE'S GULLS.

Silver Lake in Rehoboth Beach had about 250 CANVASBACK, plus RUDDY DUCK, LESSER SCAUP, RED-BREASTED, and HOODED MERGANSER. There was also a BONAPARTE'S GULL flying over the lake.

A EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE was seen at Armstrong's Farm, north of Smyrna at the intersection of McQuail Road and Eagle Nest Landing Road. That bird was in a flock of MOURNING DOVES but flew off and has not been seen since. How long before this invader takes over the state?

A LAPLAND LONGSPUR and 9 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at the entrance road to Bombay Hook NWR off Whitehall Neck Road just past the intersection with Route 9. A drake RING-NECKED DUCK was seen at Finis Pool off Raymond Neck Rd. PINE SISKIN and over 50 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS were also seen at Finis. AMERICAN COOT, NORTHERN SHOVELER, and TUNDRA SWAN were at Shearness Pool.

A nice raft of ducks at the north end of Kitts Hummock included a drake WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, CANVASBACK, LESSER and GREATER SCAUP, and RUDDY DUCK. CANVASBACK was also seen at Pickering Beach along with a RED-THROATED LOON. A WESTERN SANDPIPER was among the SANDERLING and DUNLIN on the beach.

Hoope's Reservoir continues to have RING-NECKED DUCKS, BUFFLEHEADS, PIED-BILLED GREBE and COMMON and HOODED MERGANSERS. An adult BALD EAGLE was seen eating a goose at Carpenter's Cove from the Route 82 causeway.

9 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were reported this week at Ramsey Road at Woodlawn Trustee's property across from Granogue. A flock of 31 RUSTY's were at Prime Hook NWR this week. For the first time in many years, none have been seen at Ashland Nature Center this fall. RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS were reported this week at Prime Hook and the Logan Lane Tract.

Birds at Lums Pond this week included RED-SHOULDEERED HAWK, BROWN THRASHER, GRAY CATBIRD, and FOX SPARROW. GREAT EGRETS were seen at Dragon Run.

Another GRAY CATBIRD was found at Christiana Hospital. That bird was half frozen in the sub-freezing weather on Monday.

BARN OWL and SHORT-EARED OWL were found in the Taylor's Bridge area on Sunday. BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON and WOOD DUCK were also reported.

PINE SISKINS were reported coming to several feeders in the Hockessin area. PURPLE FINCH and FOX SPARROW were reported coming to a feeder in Oak Grove near Seaford.

BROWN-HEADED and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES continue to be seen at Cape Henlopen State Park. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was found at Herring Point. A WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH was found at the powerline cut on the Pickering Beach Road, always a good bird below New Castle County.

Special thanks this week to Tom Clarke, Kim Steininger, Derek Stoner, Mike Smith, Glen Lovelace and Frank Rohrbacher for their reports. Send your reports to the Birdline, or add to the state year list by calling 302-792-9591 or email ednieap@verizon.net. Until next week, good birding.
