Fred Breukelman
Fred Breukelman is vice president of Delaware Audubon, and has been a board member for the past 14 years. He has been a member of National Audubon since 1980.
"I've been an environmentalist all my life," he says. He joined his first environmental group while in a small South Dakota high school. He later became active in other environmental organizations, including the Sierra Club. Changes instituted in National Audubon during the tenure of Audubon President (and former Delaware Governor) Russell W. Peterson encouraged Fred to become more involved in the Audubon Society.
Fred believes that environmental issues are now of greater importance than ever before. Therefore, environmental science and science education are more important. He wants to do more public education about the environment, and sees our web site as a tool to do that. He is concerned about habitat loss in Delaware, including the loss of forests and wetlands. As a certified health education specialist, he is especially interested in environmental issues related to health.
Fred works for the Delaware Division of Public Health as director of health education. He is a past president of the national professional society, the Directors of Health Promotion and Education. In his spare time, he likes to read, write, and get involved with almost anything relating to music. He also enjoys outdoor activities, including bicycling—and he is a member of the Delaware Bicycle Council. He and his wife, Joan, currently live northwest of Dover.
